Windows PC Maker Orders ‘Several Hundred Thousand’ Biometric Sensors from FPC

Fingerprint Cards has received a big new order for its PC-focused biometric fingerprint sensor solution.

In announcing the development, the biometrics specialist did not name its client, nor did it indicate the value of the order. But the company described the customer as “a top-tier global Windows PC manufacturer,” and said that it had ordered “several hundred thousand sensors”.

While FPC made its name in the mobile biometrics boom of the past decade, establishing itself as a leading supplier of fingerprint sensors, it has in recent years sought to expand into new business areas. The PC market is one of them, with Fingerprint Cards announcing a line of solutions focused on computer applications last summer.

The company’s software solution is compatible with Windows 10’s Windows Hello secure authentication system, meaning that any devices running the operating system that feature FPC’s biometric technology can let users access their profiles with a simple fingerprint scan. But FPC’s solutions are not limited to Windows devices; they could be integrated into any PCs, laptops, notebooks, or other such devices.

“I am very pleased with this order, which is testimony to the strength of our offering for the PC market,” said Fingerprint Cards’ VP of Customer Engineering and Sales Haiyuan Bu. “We are poised for continued growth in this segment, providing the perfect way to add convenient and secure authentication to PCs.”

FPC’s announcement suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic may have been a factor in the order, with increases in remote working calling for more sophisticated authentication security. At the very least, the trend could help to drive further demand for FPC’s PC-focused biometric solutions going forward.

The development arrives on the heels of Fingerprint Cards’ announcement of a new order for its T-Shape fingerprint sensor module for biometric payment cards, another important new business area for the company.
