West Virginia has joined the growing number of U.S. jurisdictions enabling mobile IDs in smartphone wallets. On October 23, 2025 Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginia driver’s licenses and state ID cards can now be added to Apple Wallet. Residents who add their credentials can present them for identity verification using an iPhone or Apple Watch at over 250 TSA airport checkpoints nationwide, including at Charleston Yeager and Huntington Tri-State airports. Morrisey noted that this makes West Virginia “the 12th state in the country to adopt this technology”.
This move builds on West Virginia’s mobile driver’s license (mDL) program launched in late 2024. Mobile ID World reported that in December 2024 the state rolled out a QR-code–based mDL app (developed with IDEMIA) that allowed secure presentation of credentials for TSA PreCheck and age checks. At that time officials indicated plans to “expand its mobile ID credentials to major brands’ digital wallets”. The latest announcement fulfills that promise, making WV the newest state to let citizens store their ID in Apple Wallet. State officials emphasize that the Wallet-based IDs use ISO 18013-5 mDL standards for security and privacy: users authorize any data sharing via Face ID/Touch ID and remain in control of their information.
The Apple Wallet addition follows a steady build‑out of West Virginia’s mobile ID program. In December 2024, the DMV and IDEMIA launched the Mobile ID app aligned with emerging ISO mDL specifications.
In September 2024 IDEMIA completed field testing with TSA; on January 8, 2025, TSA added West Virginia to its digital ID acceptance program. Samsung Wallet support followed in February 2025, paving the way for today’s Apple Wallet support.
