The Vishakhapatnam Waltair railway division has deployed Mantra’s temperature detection system at three East coast railway stations in India. The Mirada Rapid system has now been installed at Bhubaneswar and Cuttack stations, in addition to Vishakhapatnam.
Mirada Rapid will scan the forehead of each person who steps onto the railway platform, and determine the temperature of each individual at that time. The solution will then notify administrators if it spots anyone with a body temperature higher 37.3 degrees Celsius.
The immediate goal is to slow the spread of COVID-19. Fever is a common symptom of the disease, so identifying people with an elevated body temperature will allow railway officials to take the appropriate countermeasures and reduce the risk of exposure for other passengers.
“One of the main advantages of the system is that it can detect a large number of passengers at a time,” said Vishakhapatnam Railway Protection Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Jitendra Srivastava. “Moreover, it can provide real-time accurate inspection results in diverse environments.”
Srivastava went on to note that the Mirada Rapid system can identify people’s faces, and that it can accurately assess the temperature of someone wearing a surgical mask. Mantra offers Basic, Professional, and Enterprise Mirada models, and is pitching the solution as an effective public health tool for high-traffic venues like airports, banks, and universities.
Mirada is one of several Mantra products that has been deployed to combat COVID-19. The company recently launched facial recognition scanners with temperature detection capabilities, and released the mTracker application to enable contact tracing with Bluetooth wristbands.
In that regard, Mantra is one of several companies that has emphasized thermal detection in response to the pandemic. Telpo has released its own temperature detection terminal, while ZKTeco has unveiled a standalone (and portable) infrared thermometer that was designed specifically for indoor spaces.
