Walmart has partnered with CLEAR and The Commons Project Foundation (TCP) in an effort to make it easier for people to access and share their COVID-19 immunity credentials. To that end, the retail giant will allow people to link their Walmart and Sam’s Club accounts to CLEAR’s Health Pass app and/or TCP’s CommonHealth and CommonPass apps.
Both the CLEAR and TCP offerings allow patients to share COVID-19 test and vaccination results without disclosing any other personal information. Health Pass and CommonPass are available for iOS and Adroid devices, while CommonHealth is only available for Android. All three apps are free, as are digital Walmart and Sam’s Club accounts.
The service is geared towards people who are vaccinated at a Walmart or Sam’s Club location. A digital version of the vaccination record will appear in each patient’s store account, and the patient can then log in to give the app permission to share that record with Health Pass, CommonPass, or CommonHealth. After that, the customer will be able to use their chosen app to prove that they have been vaccinated when entering public-facing facilities like restaurants, offices, and entertainment venues, or at the airport when they travel.
The Walmart program is designed to meet the interoperable SMART Health Cards standard being established by TCP’s Vaccination Credential Initiative. The various parties are hoping that the apps will support the safe return to public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our goal is to give customers vaccinated at Walmart free and secure digital access to their vaccine record and enable them to share that information with third parties seeking to confirm their vaccination status,” said Walmart US President and CEO John Furner.
“We are proud to help Walmart customers better control, access, and share their health and vaccine information,” added CLEAR Chairman and CEO Caryn Seidman-Becker. “This partnership will help get people back to what they love.”
Walmart is now one of several healthcare providers that allows patients to share their COVID-19 credentials through the Health Pass app. CLEAR has formed similar partnerships with LabCorp and Quest to link the app to people’s COVID-19 test results.
