Welcome to Voice Month at FindBiometrics. All throughout the month of February we will be taking an in depth look at the hands free biometric modality that has everyone talking as we post featured articles on voice and present an exclusive expert webinar.
There is quite a bit to talk about when we talk about voice biometrics so to start things off here is a rundown of the big topics in the most vocal of modalities.
Sounding Good
The voice biometrics market is a dynamic space. Not to be confused with speech recognition, which can pick out the words a user speaks for hands free interfacing, voice biometric authentication measures the unique biological traits that produce your signature sound.
Recently, thanks to the proliferation of consumer mobile devices and the advent of the Internet of Things, voice biometrics has been placed on the receiving end of a surge in popularity. With projected market growth on a global scale and new innovations in liveness detection, power consumption and overall performance, the ability to authenticate with your voice has never been more feasible, secure or convenient.
Here are some articles that will bring you up to speed on the biggest developments in voice biometrics from the past year.

Sounding Bad
Not just a consumer technology, voice biometrics can be used in law enforcement situations to identify the voices of wanted persons from recordings and phone call data. Voice biometrics powered forensics are becoming increasingly useful as collected spoken audio data continues to grow through various media. In a particularly novel case demonstrating these elements, the identity of an eccentric anonymous philanthropist who went by the alias “Mr Free Cash” was revealed by a news outlet thanks to the application of biometric software to a podcast and a recording from a phone interview.
In a more preventative case, voice biometrics is being employed in correctional facilities in order to ensure calls taking place in jails are only with pre-authorized people.

Money Talks
It’s no secret that biometrics have an important place in the future of finance. Voice biometrics are no exception. With deployments in banking and payment situations, the modality of the month is helping cut down on fraud and keeping transactions secure.

Walking and Talking
Part of what makes voice biometrics so appealing in a consumer sense is that, with the application of software, any microphone can be used as an authenticating sensor. With mobile phones in the pockets of an increasingly massive section of the world population, that means everyone and their parents has the ability to use their voice as a security factor.
What’s more is that the software doesn’t even need to be on the user’s device in order to authenticate. As seen in the above category dealing with financial applications, call centers can host the software, authenticating user transactions seamlessly with absolutely zero effort on behalf of the user. In many situations it’s hard to imagine a modality better suited to bringing convenience to over-the-phone identification.
