Vision-Box is taking aim at the Japanese market for airport biometrics, opening a new office and “Center of Excellence” in Tokyo.
Accordingly, the company has also appointed a Managing Director for Japan. Koichi Mikami comes to the company after working for SITA, another provider of biometric identity solutions for airports, for six -and-a-half years, acting as the company’s general manager for Japan for well over four years.
In announcing its new Japanese division, Vision-Box emphasized the travel growth anticipated for the country, with a sizeable boost expected for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Citing figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Vision-Box said Japan will see over 40 million overseas travelers next year, and 8.2 billion air travelers by 2037.
Japanese government authorities have shown a growing interest in biometric border control technologies, with facial recognition technology from NEC having been deployed at Narita International Airport last autumn, marking the country’s first use of biometrics in customs screening.
As for Vision-Box, Mikami believes that the company is well-positioned. “Vision-Box is now even closer to Japan’s airports, airlines, government and other key stakeholders,” he said. “This helps us to cater to their specific needs, modernize their processes, and deliver first-class digital identity, biometrics and privacy management solutions”.
