New Cognitec Algorithm Offers Facial Recognition Performance Boost Across All Applications

Cognitec has upgraded the face matching algorithm of its FaceVACS facial recognition engine.

In a statement announcing the upgrade, the company asserted that its own in-house tests “show leading-edge performance levels on a variety of large datasets across typical face recognition applications.” The company emphasized its technology’s applications in scanning facial images from passports, national IDs, and mugshots, and in scanning faces that are partially turned away from a given camera.

Cognitec also highlighted “an accuracy boost” in matching low-quality passport-style photos to images from live recordings, “the process used for automated border control in eGates.” Biometric technology, particularly that based on facial recognition, is increasingly used by government authorities in border control, and by interests in the air travel sector to improve the efficiency of passenger processing.

The upgrade of Cognitec’s technology comes at a time of heightened interest in facial recognition technology, which has been popularized by the Face ID system used in Apple’s latest iPhone, and is seeing increased levels of deployment in vertical markets like national ID, border control, and financial services. Cognitec’s announcement asserted that it “is the only company worldwide that has worked exclusively on face recognition technology since its inception in 2002.”
