Today, Unisys Corporation, a global information technology company, announced that it has been chosen by Her Majesty’s Passport Office to provide its new Facial Recognition System for the passport application process in the United Kingdom.
The agreement between the two parties will last for five years and see Unisys providing systems integration services to implement its LEIDA platform. The end result will be an automated and efficient passport application process that features facial biometrics.
“We are excited to be chosen for this important project,” says Unisys UK’s managing director Nick Fraser. “Unisys has applied facial and other biometrics technologies to build leading-edge passport, citizen registry and land border control systems for the United States, Australia, Mexico and other countries around the world. We look forward to applying our expertise to help the UK manage the throughput of travelers.”
Biometrics in border control are currently experiencing a period of growth. Recently findBIOMETRICS hosted a webinar in association with Acuity Market Intelligence that examined this area of biometric application in terms of its increasing global demand.
Automation of border control processes are becoming increasingly necessary on all ends of the transaction that has become modern travelling for reasons of both convenience and security. Expect to see more announcements in this vein over the next five year period, especially in the European market.
