The United Kingdom’s Home Office has commenced its search for up to six new members to join its Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group (BFEG), an independent scientific advisory committee. The Home Office is specifically seeking individuals with expertise in various domains, including the law, social sciences, data ethics, artificial intelligence, medical ethics, and biometrics.
This move comes in light of the upcoming departure of the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Fraser Sampson, whose office is expected to be absorbed under the Investigatory Powers Commissioner once the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill is approved by parliament.
The BFEG, an advisory non-departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office, plays a crucial role in providing independent ethical guidance to the Home Office and its ministers concerning projects that involve the implementation of policies. The group offers its insight and recommendations in support of the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s efforts.
The Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Fraser Sampson, had originally agreed to extend his term until the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill received Royal Assent. However, due to personal commitments and the delayed parliamentary schedule, Sampson announced his impending resignation, with plans to leave his position by the end of October.
Individuals interested in becoming part of the Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group have until September 11, 2023, to submit their applications. The Home Office’s search aims to find experts in diverse fields who can contribute their knowledge and insights to ensure ethical considerations are effectively addressed in the realm of biometrics and forensics. The new appointees will join the committee for a three-year term, and their collective expertise will play a pivotal role in shaping the ethical framework of biometric and forensic projects carried out by the UK government.
