“Called ‘mAadhaar’, the mobile app essentially acts as a virtual Aadhaar ID card, containing standard biographic information.”
The Unique Identification Authority of India is preparing to launch an iOS version of the app for Aadhaar, India’s national biometric ID program.
The news came by way of a recent Q&A session on Twitter with UIDAI head Ajay Bushan Pandey, who said that work on the app is currently underway and that it will launch “soon”. The app will arrive several months after an Aadhaar app was launched for Android devices last summer.
Called ‘mAadhaar’, the mobile app essentially acts as a virtual Aadhaar ID card, containing standard biographic information. It also features support for security features based on biometric unlocking, QR code scanning, and one-time passwords.
The development comes amid mounting criticism over the extensive use of Aadhaar in Indian society, with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and a former Indian intelligence agency head both publicly decrying the program. At the same time, the UIDAI has recently announced measures to enhance the system, including adding support for facial recognition for citizen authentication, and a tokenization system that will allow citizens to authenticate via Aadhaar without having to share their Aadhaar numbers.
