India’s Unique Identification Authority has released a software development kit that lets Android and iOS apps perform Aadhaar face authentication without sending users into a separate application.
The native Face Authentication SDK is intended for government departments, banks, fintech companies and other organizations authorized to use Aadhaar authentication. It replaces the earlier need to switch from an organization’s app into UIDAI’s FaceRD application during the face-capture step.
UIDAI said the kit includes liveness detection, anti-spoofing controls, encryption and secure handling of authentication data. A liveness check is designed to distinguish a person present at the camera from an image, recording or other presentation attack.
The agency also opened a sandbox where developers can test a complete authentication journey before deploying it in a live service. Test scenarios cover software provisioning, user consent, image capture, liveness, authentication, response validation and common error or failure conditions, without requiring external biometric hardware.
A separate onboarding playbook provides guidance for banks, insurers and other financial-services organizations that want to add face authentication to customer journeys. The materials are intended to reduce integration work and make implementations more consistent across participating services.
UIDAI says Aadhaar face authentication has handled more than five billion transactions since its introduction in 2021 and is used by nearly 200 organizations. The modality allows an authorized service to compare a live facial image with the identity holder’s Aadhaar record as part of an authentication request.
The release follows a broader redesign of Aadhaar’s mobile services. UIDAI recently began replacing the mAadhaar app with a privacy-focused Aadhaar application that gives users more control over how identity data are shared.
The authority is also seeking domestically developed liveness and contactless fingerprint technology for future authentication infrastructure. It has separately introduced AI-supported controls for biometric deduplication to identify duplicate or irregular enrollment records.
The native SDK changes the front end of face authentication: an Aadhaar-supported service can keep the capture and consent steps within its own branded mobile journey while UIDAI continues to process the authentication request. For developers, the corresponding sandbox provides a controlled route for checking success and failure states before connecting an application to production Aadhaar services.
