Ras Al Khaimah Innovation City, an AI-focused free zone in the United Arab Emirates, has launched what it describes as the world’s first blockchain-based digital business identity, powered by IOPn’s native OPN Chain, replacing static trade licences with cryptographically verifiable digital business identities. The system issues each registered business entity a verifiable on-chain identity that encodes registration data, ownership information, and operational status into a blockchain record that any counterparty can authenticate without contacting the free zone authority directly.
The cryptographic verifiability eliminates the need to call a central registry or request official documents for routine due-diligence checks. A bank, supplier, or partner can verify the business identity in real time by querying the OPN Chain rather than initiating a manual verification process. The deployment replaces what the free zone characterizes as static licences, documents that can be forged, become outdated, or require time-consuming manual verification, with dynamic, tamper-evident digital identity records.
Business identity verification, also known as Know Your Business or KYB, is a major compliance bottleneck in cross-border trade and financial services. Blockchain-based approaches have attracted growing interest from financial institutions and trade finance platforms because they allow credential verification without a persistent connection to the issuing authority. The RAK deployment reflects broader UAE national digital identity ambitions, which include plans to replace physical Emirates ID cards with a smartphone-based facial recognition system.
The UAE has been building out blockchain identity infrastructure across multiple layers. Dubai’s biometric blockchain identity card, the Serenity sAxess, launched in March 2025 combining fingerprint authentication with on-chain asset management, and UAE blockchain and biometric business platforms for institutional digital asset trading also launched in the country in mid-2025.
OPN Chain is the native blockchain layer of IOPn, a UAE-based decentralized infrastructure provider focused on enterprise identity and trust applications. Ras Al Khaimah Innovation City is one of several free zones in the UAE, which collectively host large numbers of internationally registered businesses.
