TypingDNA Replaces SMS Codes With Typing Biometrics

TypingDNA has released a new two-factor authentication solution that is intended to serve as a replacement for SMS one-time passwords. Like the company’s other offerings, TypingDNA Verify uses typing biometrics to confirm the identity of a user during login.

With TypingDNA Verify, users will be presented with a pop-up window (instead of an SMS code) during the authentication process. They will then be asked to type in a few words into that window, and TypingDNA will compare those keystrokes to that person’s existing biometric profile. After that, the interaction will be allowed to proceed if the two are a match.

While TypingDNA Verify was designed to replace SMS codes, the system can still send a code should the client organization still wish to do so. However, TypingDNA stressed that the SMS code is not the primary authentication factor in that case, and is instead sent to establish a basic root of trust with the user and their device.

According to TypingDNA, Verify will allow companies to deliver a more streamlined user experience while minimizing the costs associated with SMS codes. The company is offering the new solution at a base price of only one cent per active user per month, and is even making it free for one year for up to 100,000 users for early adopters. TypingDNA Verify is able to field a high volume of traffic, and the monthly price holds regardless of the total number of verifications.

TypingDNA’s technology analyzes factors like typing speed and pressure to build a unique biometric profile of each user. The company recently launched a free Developer plan to encourage more companies to integrate the technology into their apps, and gave away more than $10,000 in prizes during a hackathon that challenged competitors to come up with innovative uses of the technology.
