The TSA has announced that it’s working with United Airlines to install automated eGates at airports across the US the autumn. The organizations are aiming to start with 17 automated lanes at the Newark Liberty International Airport, with more to come soon after at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport and the Los Angeles International Airport.
In a statement announcing the initiative, TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger explained, “We continue to test and deploy state-of-the-art technologies to ensure that we remain current,” an approach that is also reflected in its efforts with TSA PreCheck, a pre-screening program that aims to expedite passenger processing at participating efforts with biometric screening. With passenger wait times swelling during the busy summer travel season, the program has seen rising demand, prompting IdentoGO to open a number of temporary enrollment centers this summer.
It isn’t yet clear that the TSA’s efforts with United Airlines will incorporate biometric scanning, but given the growing popularity of such solutions, it doesn’t seem unlikely that future efforts will seek to leverage its advantages, especially as the US Customs and Border Protection agency itself tests biometric screening solutions at major US airports. It all points to faster, more secure passenger processing down the line, in many cases with the help of biometric technology.
