Welsh startup Touch Biometrix now has a Chief Technology Officer to help it pursue its ambitious aims: The company has announced that Eric Derckx is its new CTO.
The news comes after the company, which was founded in 2017, announced that it had received £150,000 in seed funding, which it would use to develop a fingerprint sensor with a market-disrupting price of $1 per unit. In a statement announcing Derckx’s appointment, Touch Biometrix explained that his role “will be to manage the development of the company’s first fingerprint sensor product.”
The company highlighted Derckx’s “20 years in senior roles with some of the consumer electronics industry giants, including Philips, Samsung and Amazon”. Derckx’s experience is mostly connected to Liquavista, a Netherlands-based Philips spinoff specializing in video display technology. The company was purchased by Samsung Electronics in 2010, which then sold it to Amazon in 2013. During that three-year period, Derckx served as the company’s VP of Engineering, taking on the role of Engineering Director in 2013, which he held until he left the company in 2016.
In leading the development of Touch Biometrix’ promised ultra-cheap fingerprint sensor, Derckx will face a considerable technical challenge, with many well-established fingerprint sensor makers now seeking to reduce their own costs in an increasingly saturated mobile market. For his part, the new CTO asserted in a statement that he is “thrilled to have the opportunity to play such a significant part” in shaping Touch Biometrix’s future.
