Wales-based Touch Biometrix says it has developed the world’s largest and thinnest capacitive fingerprint sensor based on Thin-Film Transistor technology. In fingerprint sensors, TFT can be used to create a grid of transistors that can detect the presence of a fingertip’s ridges and valleys for fingerprint recognition.
Built on Touch Biometrix’s Active Pixel architecture, the TCAP60 sensor offers 500 pixels-per-inch, and is scalable to any shape or size, according to the company. It is a FAP 60 sensor, making it appropriate for capturing high-quality fingerprint images that are suitable for law enforcement and other high-security applications.
“Touch Biometrix decided to develop TCAP60, in FAP60 size and resolution as its first product, even if it is with the most challenging dimension within the FBI certified list, because we knew our technology had the full scalability to any size and we wanted to prove to the world Touch Biometrix’s technology is the one to adopt,” said CEO Eric Derickx.
The sensor is manufactured by Sharp Display Technology, using the latter’s IGZO TFT based substrate. IGZO, or Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide, is a key component in LCD screens, acting as individual switches for pixels. IGZO is known for its high electron mobility compared to traditional silicon TFTs, which allows for faster pixel charging, higher display resolution, reduced power consumption, and potentially thinner screens.
These technologies enable Touch Biometrix’s new sensor to be highly scalable in size and shape, flexible in design, and remarkably energy-efficient in performance, making it an innovative solution for a wide range of applications from mobile devices to high-security equipment.
Touch Biometrix, which was energized by a £2 million investment from the UK VC firm Deepbridge Capital in 2019, says it will showcase the new FAP 60 sensor at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show in January.
