SA Consumer Products has recalled 133,370 gun safes, specifically the Sanctuary Quick Access Biometric Home Safe and the Sports Afield Home Defense 4-Gun Biometric Safe, due to unreliable biometric locks.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), unauthorized users may be able to open these safes, posing a significant risk of serious injury or death. The Illinois-based company reported 77 instances of unauthorized access but no injuries.
The news follows an announcement from the CPSC In February of this year that it would be cracking down on biometric gun safes. At the time, the Commission announced recalls for products from multiple brands, including Machir, Bulldog, MouTec, and Awesafe.
The Commission warned that the biometric locking systems on these safes can be easily opened by unauthorized users, posing significant risks of injury or death. Its action followed a tragic incident last year in which a faulty fingerprint-based biometric lock on a Fortress Safe allowed a 12-year-old boy to gain access, resulting in his death. The incident led to a recall of the Fortress Safe product and a lawsuit against the company. The CPSC’s crackdown aims to prevent similar tragedies by ensuring the reliability of biometric safes.
Even as that lawsuit was being prepared, at least seven school corporations in Indiana announced they were implementing on-premises emergency response teams equipped with biometric gun safes to enhance security against potential shootings.
