In September of last year at the Biometric Consortium Conference, Green Bit – an Italian headquartered company that specializes in Livescan technologies – introduced its MultiScan527: a biometric reader that can scan an entire hand in conformance with FBI standards. Recently, the company announced that this new product has made authentication history, having been named as the first Livescan to achieve the FBI’s Appendix P certification.
The decision behind the seminal FBI certification, according to Green Bit, lies in the MultiScan527’s ability to acquire what are known as “major case” or supplemental prints, in addition to it’s image quality specifications (previously certified under Appendix F). MultiScan527 is not just comprehensive and accurate, but also fast, acquiring full frame images at speeds reading 8 fps and rolled prints at 25 fps.
The initial Appendix F certification that Green Bit’s Livescan device already boasted prior to this news indicated that the MultiScan527 is able to acquire 4-slaps and palm impressions at an accuracy appropriate for the FBI’s purposes. Now that the new certification is official, it’s safe to say that the supplemental prints that the palm-livescan is capable of getting off of a submitted hand, namely the thenar, full finger and rolled fingertip impressions, are also up to the high scrutiny of the Bureau.
This news is indicative of the importance of biometric innovations in law enforcement. With a new product breaking new ground for Livescan technology, those operating in the vertical market can be assured that the biometric advantage is available. This is especially true for the MultiScan527, which as explained on the product’s launch, was designed primarily to break down barriers associated in cost, while still providing FBI certified acquisition.
Upon the launch announcement prior to the BCC, speaking to the price point that Green Bit targeted with the MultiScan527, the company’s head of international sales, Christian Rutigliano, had this to say: “The MultiScan527 will be the first palm device to be offered at a price level which can be well compared to what was quoted for 10-print readers until recently. It’s already known from our DactyScan series that outstanding image quality and reliability combined with an extremely competitive pricing is feasible; adopting this philosophy to for palm devices has been difficult challenge and the MultiScan527 is the proud result”
