White House Issues Executive Order on AI

The White House has issued a much-anticipated executive order concerning artificial intelligence. A fact sheet detailing the order makes no mention of biometrics; but among the order’s mandates is a requirement that the federal government set guidelines to prevent algorithmic bias in AI technologies. There are also requirements for federal agencies to enhance their privacy requirements, and for the Department of Commerce to develop guidance concerning “content authentication and watermarking to clearly label AI-generated content.”

Rep. Lieu Reintroduces ‘Facial Recognition Act’

A group of Congress members have reintroduced the “Facial Recognition Act”, a piece of legislation that would set guardrails for how law enforcement can use the technology. A key provision is the need to obtain a warrant that shows probable cause when police are using facial recognition to investigate a violent crime. The bill had previously been put forward in September of last year, but never saw a vote during that congressional session. It has once again been put forward by Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., with sponsors Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif.; Glenn Ivey, D-Md.; Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas; and Marc Veasey, D-Texas, and Yvette Clarke, D-NY.

Open Letter Calls for Debate on UK’s Data Sharing With EU

A range of organizations, including Statewatch, Big Brother Watch, and Liberty, have published an open letter calling for transparent dialogue in the United Kingdom’s Parliament about the country’s participation in Prüm, a police data exchange program run by the European Union. The EU is preparing to expand the program and, under “Prüm II”, to allow cross-border searches of face images. The letter notes that police in the UK have been found to unlawfully retain the biometric data of individuals brought into custody, which would then be subject to searches conducted by EU organizations.

authID Sets Date for Q3 Earnings Report

authID has set a date for its Q3 earnings report. The company will publish its results on November 8 after market close, with CEO Rhon Daguro and CFO Ed Sellitto to host a webcast following the publication, at 5:30pm EDT. The company has already offered a preview of its performance in the quarter, announcing earlier this month that it had seen a 300 percent increase in sales quarter-over-quarter, and that it had seen over $1 million in “Booked Annual Recurring Revenue”, a non-GAAP metric.

Imprivata Launches Biometric Solution for Mobile EPCS

Imprivata has launched a mobile-based solution for electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS). Developed in collaboration with IDEMIA, Aware, and Epic, the solution uses facial recognition to verify the medical practitioner prescribing the medication. It is designed to operate through the Epic Haiku and Canto mobile apps. “Imprivata has a long history of helping healthcare delivery organizations strike the necessary but often elusive balance between security and convenience, and we are excited to introduce our new facial recognition technology to help our clients unlock the potential of mobile to drive efficiency, productivity, and better patient care,” said Imprivata SVP Sean Kelly.

AU10TIX Tools Come to Azure Marketplace

Two of AU10TIX’s flagship solutions are now available on the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. These include its ID Document and Biometric Verification platform, which is meant to help businesses fight fraud, and its Reusable Digital ID. AU10TIX was among the small handful of biometric authentication specialists to get access to Microsoft’s Azure AD identity and access management service back in early 2021. “AU10TIX has one of the longest and most successful track records of any company in the IDV space, and we are very proud of the strong relationship we have built with Microsoft over the years,” said the company’s CEO, Dan Yerushalmi.
