TECH5 has unveiled a new Proof of Vaccination credential that allows people to share their immunization status without sharing any other personal information. Under the system, people will be given a secure credential when they receive their COVID-19 vaccine, and they would then be able to present that credential to prove their status when entering a public venue.
The IDs themselves can be printed as physical documents, and can also be stored electronically on a mobile device. In either case, the encrypted ID will store a vaccination date, a biometric template, and an image of the owner’s face. Venue operators can then scan and verify the document using software that can run on a standard smartphone.
The use of biometric technology ensures that the vaccine record does in fact belong to the person holding the document. However, the document (and the information on it) never leaves the hands of the owner. As a result, the solution gives people more control over their personal data and lets them share health information while still preserving their privacy.
The TECH5 solution can run entirely offline, and does not need to cross-reference the result with an external medical or identity database. It can be used to share COVID-19 test results in addition to vaccination status, and will be rolled out in the first quarter of 2021.
“This new solution can be implemented quickly and used immediately,” said TECH5 Co-Founder and CEO Machiel van der Harst. “Furthermore, the solution does not have complicated architecture that requires a significant investment in hardware; rather, it can be easily integrated with most existing infrastructures.”
TECH5 is hoping that its solution will make it safe for people to return to shopping centers, sports arenas, and other public venues. The technology can also be used in the travel industry to make sure travelers are complying with international COVID-19 requirements.
The news makes TECH5 the latest company to offer COVID-19 immunity credentials. CLEAR, Yoti, and IDEMIA have all released solutions that allow people to link a COVID test result to a secure digital identity.
