TECH5′s technology has taken top positions in the “Liveness Detection Competition 2023 For Noncontact Fingerprint Systems and Algorithms“, an evaluation program organized by Clarkson University in collaboration with the University at Buffalo.
The testing competition was the first in the schools’ “LivDet” program to evaluate contactless liveness detection systems, with previous competitions having focused on contact-based fingerprint systems and iris biometrics. The contactless competition had two categories of assessment — one concerning algorithms and based on a single fingerprint, and another that assessed Presentation Attack Detection systems including hardware, based on a single fingerprint and a four-finger scan.
While a full list of results has not yet been published by LivDet organizers, TECH5 has revealed that it took both the first and second rankings in the systems category, both for single- and four-fingerprint liveness detection. TECH5 demonstrated a 100 percent accuracy rate in the detection of sophisticated spoofing attempts that used materials including wood glue, latex, and even Playdoh.
In a statement, TECH5 co-founder, Chairman, and CTO Rahul Parthe suggested that the company’s solution, based on neural network AI training (or “NN” in TECH5’s parlance), not only bested the competition, but did so by a considerable margin.
“We are delighted to share these fantastic results of our research team’s effort, leading to a development of algorithms that are twenty times more accurate than the nearest competition in the evaluation, making it effectively the best NN-based fingerprint liveness detection technology in the world,” he said.
The strong performance is good news for users of TECH5’s T5-AirSnap Finger, a mobile-based fingerprint capture solution for both biometric enrolment and authentication. More broadly, TECH5’s LivDet performance should help to further bolster its profile in the identity industry, where the company has been establishing partnerships with other important players and exerting influence as a new member of the Secure Identity Alliance and its OSIA Initiative.
