Tech Innovation Hub Opts for BioConnect Wellness Checks for Access Control

Toronto-based innovation hub MaRS Discovery District has announced that it has chosen biometric authentication technology company BioConnect’s Wellness Declaration Solution (WDS) as its COVID-19 screening tool to allow it to meet new standards for safety set out by Ontario’s Ministry of Health.

With a number of essential laboratories housed within it, the MaRS centre has been required to stay open throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“MaRS embraces new Canadian technologies and we’re very pleased to have had the opportunity to work with BioConnect in deploying this simple, cost-effective platform that integrates with our existing Lenel card access infrastructure,” said Randal Froebelius, Real Estate Lead at MaRS. “BioConnect will serve as a key access control protocol for ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for our operations team in support of our essential tenants.”

By utilizing BioConnect’s WDS, MaRS will be able to convert any door with a card reader into a smart door capable of sending a health screening survey via push notification to a users’ smartphone while they await entry. It works by having the user download the BioConnect app, and when they seek entry into a building employing the WDS system, they will receive a ‘health status step up’ mobile authentication request to confirm their current health status.

The notifications are sent once per day, with the users reporting any symptoms or COVID-19 test results to the WDS and entry either granted or denied depending on the outcome of the survey.

BioConnect has enjoyed a successful year thus far. In July, its BioConnect Link mobile authentication solution won Best Emerging Technology at the 2020 ISC West New Product Showcase, and just a few weeks later the company announced it was chosen by the Digital Technology Supercluster to aid in the economic recovery and renewal of Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic.
