Tascent Tech Takes to the Seas with Cruise Ship Partner

Tascent is taking to the seas: The company has announced that its biometric technology will be used for passenger boarding by Royal Caribbean Cruises.

The system will revolve around facial recognition, and will run on the Tascent Enterprise Suite and RCL’s own software systems. It’s going to make its debut with the first departure of RCL’s new Celebrity Edge cruise ship, which will make its first voyage from Fort Lauderdale in December.

Announcing the development in a blog post, Tascent said that it’s the result of “an intense, fast-paced development effort,” and explained that the facial recognition system would be used for RCL’s “Expedited Arrivals” process. Customers are able to sign up for the program ahead of time from the comfort of their own homes, allowing them to “breeze through check-in and boarding upon arrival”.

The technology in play in this project may to some extent be related to NEC, the renowned facial recognition specialist that took a significant stake in Tascent this past summer. NEC made its investment as the leader of a series-B funding round that brought Tascent $19.5 million in total, which surely helped to put some wind in the firm’s sails as it pursued new market opportunities like the RCL partnership.
