Targus Brings Biometric Dock With Synaptics Fingerprint Tech to CES 2022

Targus will be bringing two new universal docks to this week’s CES 2022 show in Las Vegas. The DOCK710 and the DOCK720 come with virtually identical feature sets, save for the fingerprint sensor that has been integrated into the design of the DOCK720 for additional security.

The fingerprint-enabled DOCK720 – formally known as the USB-C Hybrid/Universal 4K Quad Dock with 100W PD and Fingerprint ID – is being billed as the first device of its kind with biometric capabilities. The fingerprint integration is being realized through a partnership with Synaptics, which is supplying Targus with its SentryPoint biometric solution. SentryPoint is able to complete matches directly on the Prometheus FS7600 fingerprint sensor, and comes with built-in encryption and anti-spoofing features.

Beyond the biometric features, the DOCK720 USB-C, USB-A ports, and ethernet ports, and it can support either one single 8K resolution or four 4K displays through HDMI connections. The hybrid design leverages Synaptics’ DisplayLink technology, and is compatible with major operating systems like Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and Chrome.

The DOCK710 is identical to the DOCK720 aside from the fingerprint sensor. Targus is pitching the DOCK710 as a more affordable home option for everyday consumers, while the DOCK720 is being geared toward enterprises with more stringent security requirements. Both devices will hit stores later this month at $372.99 and $442.99, respectively.

Synaptics’ Selene fingerprint sensor was previously featured in a new ThinkPad from Lenovo, while the company itself recently acquired DSP Group in an effort to boost its voice biometrics portfolio. Targus, meanwhile, is one of the partners backing Qualcomm’s Small Business Accelerator Program.
