Tamil Nadu is moving forward with plans to modernize attendance tracking across educational institutions, with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) leading efforts to upgrade biometric systems. The initiative includes updating Aadhaar-enabled biometric attendance systems (AEBAS) from Level 0 to Level 1 devices, with completion targeted for June 30, 2024. The upgrade follows India’s broader mandate for biometric attendance systems in higher education institutions implemented last year.
The upgrade forms part of a broader state-wide initiative to standardize attendance tracking across various sectors. Level 1 devices offer enhanced security features and improved accuracy compared to Level 0 devices, including registered device certification, encryption of biometric data at the point of capture, and advanced liveness detection capabilities. The improvements address vulnerabilities identified in earlier Level 0 implementations while providing more robust attendance verification capabilities.
The TNSDC’s deployment of upgraded AEBAS devices supports existing state government efforts to enhance accountability and efficiency in educational institutions. The systems use Aadhaar-based authentication methods to verify staff presence during working hours, building upon India’s successful integration of biometric technology in various sectors.
Technical specifications for the new Level 1 devices include improved biometric data capture and processing capabilities, with specific requirements set by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The implementation incorporates stringent data security measures to protect user information, including end-to-end encryption, protocols for data minimization, and explicit user consent requirements in accordance with UIDAI guidelines.
The rollout builds upon existing biometric attendance infrastructure in Tamil Nadu’s educational sector, which has been gradually expanding since 2019. State policymakers are working to ensure the systems comply with current regulations regarding data usage, transparency, and consent while maintaining operational effectiveness. The upgrade is expected to benefit over 500 educational institutions across the state, improving attendance monitoring accuracy and reducing administrative overhead.
