“Synaptics has also applied its Machine Learning AI technology to other innovations for TV streaming beyond biometric user recognition.”
This year’s IBC Conference – an industry show dedicated to media and entertainment technology – was recently held in Amsterdam, and Synaptics was on hand to show off some innovative applications of its AI-driven technology, including biometrics.
With respect to the latter, Synaptics showcased its voice and facial recognition technologies. The company showed how both technologies could be integrated into a streaming device for TV, with voice identification enabling not only the kind of command-based user interaction offered by popular voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, but also allowing the system to identify who is speaking just by their voice biometrics.
Facial recognition, meanwhile, could identify who is sitting in front of the TV, allowing the streaming device to make personalized content suggestions; it can even tailor such recommendations to couples, for example, by automatically looking up what shows two people tend to watch together.
Synaptics has also applied its Machine Learning AI technology to other innovations for TV streaming beyond biometric user recognition. A ‘logo detection’ feature of its Smart Edge AI system can detect corporate logos that appear onscreen, opening up new monetization avenues for service providers; while an ‘event detection’ system can be trained to look for any particular kind of content, such as pitches in a baseball game, in order to develop for users’ their own personal highlight reels.
These innovations offer the latest sign that the smart TV could quickly become a hub of the smart home, with new interaction and biometric recognition features offering an enhanced interface for end users. And these features could soon be coming to a TV near you.
