Facial recognition technology is being implemented in Sydney pubs as part of an initiative to identify and prevent self-excluded gamblers from accessing gaming venues. The system, developed through a partnership between Corsight AI and AusComply, is being deployed in select Sydney establishments as part of a pilot program.
The technology operates by capturing images of patrons as they enter venues, comparing them against a database of individuals who have voluntarily self-excluded from gambling activities. When the system identifies a match, it alerts venue staff who can then take appropriate action to prevent access to gaming areas.
“We are committed to ensuring that our technology is used responsibly and in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. We work closely with our clients to ensure that their data is handled securely and ethically,” stated an AusComply spokesperson.
The implementation represents part of broader efforts by the Australian government to address problem gambling through technological solutions. The system is designed to enhance the effectiveness of existing self-exclusion programs while maintaining compliance with Australian privacy laws. This initiative follows broader trends in biometric security applications being implemented in various public safety contexts.
Public response to the initiative has been mixed, with some viewing it as a necessary measure to combat problem gambling while others express privacy concerns. As with other biometric implementations, the program operates within the framework of evolving industry standards and privacy regulations. The program continues to operate under monitoring to ensure responsible implementation and compliance with regulatory requirements.
