SwiftConnect has agreed to acquire HID’s Workforce Business Unit, including the HID SAFE physical identity and access governance platform. The transaction will combine SwiftConnect’s mobile access orchestration technology with software that manages how employees, contractors and visitors receive and lose physical access rights.
Financial terms were not disclosed. HID will retain a minority, non-controlling interest in SwiftConnect after the deal closes, while SwiftConnect will remain independent under its current leadership.
HID SAFE automates physical identity lifecycle processes such as access requests, approvals, policy enforcement and revocation. It can respond to changes in human resources, information technology and security systems, helping organizations remove building privileges when a person’s role or employment status changes.
SwiftConnect’s AccessCloud platform sits between identity providers, mobile credentials and physical access control systems. It is designed to let organizations issue and manage access credentials across multiple buildings and technology vendors without requiring users to navigate separate enrollment processes for each site.
Combining the products gives SwiftConnect control over both credential delivery and the governance decisions behind it. A policy could determine that a contractor has access to a specific location for a limited period, while the mobile credential platform carries that decision to the user’s phone and the relevant access system.
The acquisition follows wider convergence between logical identity and physical security. HID has partnered with Ory on a FIDO2 platform spanning digital and physical access. Swissbit has also added HID Seos support to a combined access key and passkey authenticator.
Those deployments reflect demand for credentials that work across doors, devices and applications while preserving centralized control. Governance becomes more important as a single mobile credential gains access to a larger set of resources, because an outdated entitlement can otherwise persist in several connected systems.
Shane Butler will join SwiftConnect as executive vice president of identity and lead the SAFE business. The company says the acquired unit will continue serving existing customers while its capabilities are integrated with AccessCloud.
The agreement moves HID from full ownership of the workforce governance unit to a strategic minority position. For SwiftConnect, it expands the company from credential orchestration into the approval, policy and audit functions that determine who should receive access in the first place.
