Sweden’s Migration Agency has launched a market exploration for an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS)—another step toward modernizing its identity verification infrastructure. The agency published a Request for Information (RFI) under the European Union’s procurement directive (2014/24/EU), with an estimated project value of 40 million SEK (approximately USD 3.8 million), excluding VAT.
The procurement initiative, managed by Migrationsverket’s procurement and purchasing unit in Norrköping, Sweden, aims to gather input from potential suppliers about current ABIS technologies. This exploration follows a pattern of systematic evaluation of identity verification solutions by Swedish authorities, demonstrating their methodical approach to technological advancement.
While not yet a formal tender, the RFI represents an important preliminary step in the procurement process. The agency is giving vendors until March 31, 2025, to submit information or request clarifications through the TendSign portal.
This initiative aligns with broader European Union trends in biometric system adoption, as documented in recent industry analyses. The Migration Agency’s interest in ABIS technology reflects growing emphasis on enhancing the efficiency and security of identity verification processes in immigration, asylum, and border management operations.
The RFI’s timing suggests a strategic approach to modernizing Sweden’s migration infrastructure, building on previous technological assessments while ensuring alignment with current market capabilities and evolving identity verification standards.
