Sweden’s Migration Agency has taken a significant step toward modernizing its identity verification systems by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for an Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The announcement, made on March 12, 2025, marks the beginning of the agency’s effort to evaluate market solutions before initiating a formal procurement process.
The project, valued at approximately 40 million SEK (excluding VAT), aims to enhance Sweden’s migration management capabilities through advanced biometric technology. The proposed ABIS system will incorporate various biometric matching functionalities, potentially including fingerprint, facial recognition, and iris scanning capabilities.
Migrationsverket, as the Swedish Migration Agency is officially known, is seeking solutions that can seamlessly integrate with existing border control and asylum processing systems. The agency has specified that interested vendors must submit their responses through the TendSign platform by March 20, 2025.
The RFI focuses on software packages and information systems that can handle large-scale biometric data processing and matching. This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to strengthen border security and streamline immigration procedures through technology.
Located in Östergötlands län, Sweden, the Migration Agency has structured this market research phase under EU Directive 2014/24/EU, ensuring compliance with European procurement standards. The agency has made detailed procurement documentation available to potential vendors through its official channels.
This exploratory phase is expected to inform a subsequent formal tender process, through which the agency will select a technology provider to implement the new ABIS solution. The system will play a crucial role in Sweden’s identity management infrastructure, supporting both immigration control and national security objectives.
