Suprema Improves Biometric Platform’s Encryption

Suprema has released an updated version of its BioStar 2 access control and time management solution. BioStar 2 v2.8 will now encrypt any and all data that could be tied to any one individual, thereby strengthening the overall integrity of the platform.

The update should help address security concerns that cropped up after VPNMentor researchers were able to gain access to the BioStar database – including unencrypted usernames and passwords – back in August. Suprema downplayed the scope of that breach at the time, and noted that older versions of BioStar 2 did encrypt people’s personal data while announcing the latest improvements. The expanded use of data encryption should nevertheless help to restore user confidence in the wake of that incident.

“We place absolute top priority to strengthen security measures and reinforce our security framework,” said Suprema CEO Young Moon. “With the current update of BioStar 2, we will continue to strive to make sure our customers’ personal data is protected.”

BioStar 2 is a web-based security platform that supports both face and fingerprint recognition. Suprema has also released a contactless Mobile Access solution that uses an app to turn an employee smartphone into a unique digital credential, which should be appealing as more organizations move away from shared biometric readers in the wake of COVID-19.
