Suprema Adds Thermal Camera to Biometric Kiosk Solution

Suprema has become the latest biometrics specialist to augment its technology with temperature detection capabilities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The newly announced Suprema Thermal Camera is designed to operate together with FaceStation 2, Suprema’s biometric access control solution based on facial recognition. The Camera can be connected to the FaceStation 2 via a USB cable, and Suprema says it can measure an end user’s temperature with an accuracy of 0.5 degrees Celsius.

The aim is, of course, to detect the signs of fever, which can be an indicator of infection with COVID-19. Suprema’s system is designed to provide administrators with a subject’s temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, and a thermal image of the user, via the FaceStation 2’s graphical interface. It can be programmed to trigger an alert notification when anyone’s temperature exceeds a certain threshold.

Suprema has also adapted the solution to the pandemic age by honing its facial recognition technology to focus on the upper area of the face, allowing for the accurate scanning of individuals wearing masks. But the Suprema Thermal Camera and FaceStation 2 solution can also be set to a “bypass mode” in which facial recognition is not applied to subjects and they are only screened for temperature, thereby ensuring privacy where and when appropriate.

In a statement announcing the new solution, Suprema Inc. CEO Young S. Moon emphasized his company’s adaptability in bringing it to market. “The new Suprema Thermal Camera demonstrates our market focus,” he said. “There has been a growing demand for temperature measurement devices to be used at access point and Suprema’s Thermal Camera was designed to meet this need.”
