Sumsub Joins Merchant Risk Council to Extend E-Commerce Fraud Work

Identity verification and fraud-prevention provider Sumsub has joined the Merchant Risk Council, the global non-profit association for payments, fraud, and risk professionals, positioning its tools within the community that handles e-commerce and marketplace risk. The membership gives Sumsub a seat alongside the fraud and payments specialists who set much of the operational practice for online retail.

The Merchant Risk Council functions as an industry body where merchants, payment companies, and fraud teams share methods for handling the risks that come with online transactions. Sumsub framed its membership as a way to collaborate on the threats that recur across e-commerce and marketplaces, including fake accounts, stolen identities, seller fraud, promotion abuse, chargebacks, and mule accounts used to move illicit funds. Those categories sit at the intersection of identity and payments, where a fraudulent account and a fraudulent transaction are often the same problem viewed from two angles. For an identity-verification vendor, the council is a venue to connect onboarding checks to the downstream payment fraud that the same bad actors go on to commit.

The company tied the move to the way fraud has been industrializing. “As fraud becomes more sophisticated, businesses need to think beyond compliance and focus on protecting trust throughout the customer lifecycle,” said Andrew Novoselsky, Chief Product Officer at Sumsub, locating the work in continuous trust rather than a one-time onboarding check. Sumsub pointed to AI-driven fraud, account takeovers, and synthetic identities as the threats reshaping marketplace risk.

The membership extends a fraud-prevention push that Sumsub has been building through product moves rather than associations alone. The company has integrated Fingerprint’s device intelligence into its fraud-prevention platform to add device and network signals to its checks, and has launched verification for AI agents that ties automated actions back to verified human identities. Joining the Merchant Risk Council places that toolset inside the e-commerce risk community where it is meant to be applied.

Sumsub said the membership will let it deepen its work on e-commerce and marketplace fraud while expanding its role in the broader digital trust ecosystem.
