Sterling Backcheck has officially become the newest member of the Digital ID and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC). The company is the Canadian subsidiary of Sterling, and provides a full suite of identity verification services in addition to background checks.
The DIACC, meanwhile, is a non-profit organization that is working to create a secure digital identity framework that can support modern identity applications while still protecting the personal information of Canadian citizens. The organization has more than 100 members from both the public and the private sector, and takes a standards-based approach to the development of digital identity technologies.
As a member of the DIACC, Sterling Backcheck will offer expertise on the subject of interoperability. The goal is to drive the development of digital identity solutions that will allow Canadians to participate in the global digital economy, and establish Canada as a leader in the broader digital identity space.
“The DIACC is committed to providing the framework to develop a robust, secure, scalable, and privacy-enhancing digital identification and authentication ecosystem,” said Sterling Backcheck Managing Director Jim Hickey. “By joining, Sterling Backcheck will play a key role in developing the Pan Canadian Trust Framework, where government, business, and philanthropic leaders are coming together to collaborate and deliver resources that help solve and secure identity.”
“We are excited to welcome Sterling Backcheck to the Council, and look forward to leveraging their digital identification expertise and strategic guidance within the diverse DIACC membership,” added DIACC President Joni Brennan. “Sterling Backcheck shares the DIACC’s vision of unlocking opportunities for Canadians, decreasing costs for governments, consumers and business, improving service delivery and driving GDP growth.”
The DIACC has previously reported that there is growing support for digital IDs amongst the Canadian public. The organization introduced the Pan Canadian Trust Framework in September of 2020, and Acuant became a member of the organization a few months later.
