“…frequent flyers of Star Alliance member airlines will be able to use the same biometric identity across a wider network of airports, with the Star Alliance Biometrics platform now connecting with SITA’s shared airport infrastructure.”
A major new partnership is dramatically expanding the reach of the Star Alliance Biometrics program.
The program, which officially launched in November of 2020, is aimed at offering travelers expedited airport screening and boarding with the use of facial recognition technology for identity confirmation. It reflects the growing enthusiasm for this kind of biometric passenger processing around the world, and among the member airlines of the Star Alliance industry group.
That same enthusiasm has also propelled the popularity of similar biometric passenger processing solutions from facial recognition specialist NEC and SITA, whose Smart Path system was recently implemented at Istanbul Airport. Now, those two companies have teamed up with the Star Alliance, with all three organizations agreeing to effectively make their screening systems interoperable.
This means that frequent flyers of Star Alliance member airlines will be able to use the same biometric identity across a wider network of airports, with the Star Alliance Biometrics platform now connecting with SITA’s shared airport infrastructure. This effectively extends Star Alliance Biometrics to over 460 airports, the organizations say.
Meanwhile, the NEC I:Delight platform, which also revolves around facial recognition for passenger identification, is already in use at several Star Alliance-affiliated airports in Europe, and “can be easily integrated with SITA Smart Path,” according to a statement announcing the partnership.
Participating travelers will only need to enroll once, and can then enjoy the benefits of biometric screening at any participating airport.
“This agreement is instrumental in bringing further scale to our biometrics service, with the inherent benefits of speed and meeting customer expectations for a more touchless and hygienically safer experience across all of our member airlines,” asserted Star Alliance CEO Jeffrey Goh. “Biometrics is a key element of that experience and our strategy of leading the way in digitalizing the passenger journey.”
