Spain’s Gataca Raises New Funding to Scale Wallet-Based Identity Verification

Spanish digital identity company Gataca has closed a new funding round to scale its wallet-based identity verification business, with existing investors, including its lead investor Signature Ventures, increasing their stakes, and new backers including Wolver Ventures joining. The company did not disclose the size of the round.

Gataca builds infrastructure that lets regulated companies verify users through ID wallets, the phone-based apps in which a person holds identity credentials issued once by a trusted source and presents them with a tap. Because a relying business can cryptographically confirm where a credential came from, the model resists the forged document scans and AI-generated imagery that increasingly defeat photo-and-selfie onboarding. The company says it has spent years on the unglamorous work of making one verification system interoperate with many wallets, each with its own technical subtleties, and has deployed with public and private institutions in eight countries, processing more than 750,000 wallet transactions in 2025.

The new capital is aimed at two priorities. The first is growth in media, iGaming, and finance across Europe and beyond, sectors where the company sees regulatory clocks running: age verification laws landing on social platforms, fraud pressure and tightening rules in iGaming, and financial institutions preparing for eIDAS 2.0 obligations the company says become mandatory by the end of 2027. The second is product, deepening the intelligence layer that sits on top of verification and widening wallet interoperability beneath it, with tooling for onboarding conversion, fraud signals, and compliance automation.

Gataca is positioning itself within an EUDI Wallet ecosystem that is taking institutional shape, as the EU expands its eIDAS Dashboard into a trust hub for the Digital Identity Wallet, and where a market of intermediaries is forming, with Hopae Connect launching as an EU-registered eIDAS 2.0 intermediary.

The company, which has also advised the European Commission on the ecosystem, argues that identity fraud stopped being an edge case once generative AI reached the mass market, making deepfakes, synthetic identities, and document forgery routine, and that verification built on wallet credentials and real-time intelligence is the durable answer to it.
