South Wales Police Make First Arrest Using Live Facial Recognition

South Wales Police have made their first arrest using newly-deployed facial recognition technology.

Plans for the technology’s use were first unveiled earlier this spring, with SWP aiming to leverage surveillance cameras at the Cardiff Principality Stadium for a major soccer match this month, with additional deployments Cardiff’s main train station. The police force has also evidently deployed vans equipped with face-scanning cameras on city streets.

It was one of these vans that spotted an individual with an outstanding arrest warrant on May 31st, who was then apprehended. Speaking to Ars Technica, an SWP spokesperson indicated that the individual was a local, and that his arrest was unconnected with the UEFA Champions League event.

Ars Technica also reports that the police force obtained its facial recognition technology from NEC, the company whose facial recognition technology proved most effective in recent testing at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
