Smile ID has launched Enhanced SmartSelfie, an upgraded technology solution designed to address the increasing challenge of digital fraud. The new system incorporates dynamic liveness challenges that require users to perform random facial movements to verify their identity and prevent spoofing attempts.
The technology has achieved ISO/IEC 30107-3:2023 Level 2 certification and demonstrated a zero percent penetration rate against sophisticated spoofing methods, including deepfakes and 3D masks. Enhanced SmartSelfie integrates with Smile ID’s existing suite of biometric products, including KYC and document verification services.
The system employs machine learning to generate randomized facial action challenges while maintaining functionality in low-bandwidth conditions and on budget-friendly devices. “Fraudsters constantly adapt, and so do we,” said Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID. “Enhanced SmartSelfie gives businesses a secure tool to verify identities, reducing fraud while maintaining a seamless user experience.”
Smile ID, founded in 2017, has established itself as a significant player in African digital identity verification. The company has completed over 100 million identity verifications and secured more than $30 million in funding through various investment rounds. Its client base includes major financial and technology companies such as Chipper Cash, Paystack, Binance, and Uber.
The company maintains offices across multiple locations and employs approximately 64 people across 10 countries. In 2023, Smile ID expanded its product offerings with the launch of Smile Links, a no-code identity verification solution designed to streamline implementation for businesses.
