SMI Introduces Eye Tracking for Medical Research, Virtual Reality

SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) has introduced its latest eye tracking systems at Society for Neuroscience 2014, the world’s largest neuroscience conference. The SMI RED250mobile eye tracking system and its “smaller brother” the SMI REDn Scientific are high-performance systems with an emphasis on robust tracking and accuracy, and the company feels they would have strong applications in the field of neuroscience research.

The system offers a 250Hz sampling rate, saccadic eye tracking, and high adaptability to head movements. With such advanced technology, the company believes it could have important applications in research on neurodegenerative disorders and other cognitive issues. Moreover, the company has designed its system to allow for integration with other biometric tracking platforms, with partnerships already established with Brain Products, BIOPAC Systems, and Psychology Software Tools.

But the company is also aiming for applications beyond the medical research field, having developed an Eye Tracking integration for virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) that could be compatible with the Oculus Rift.
