Nuance Communications has announced that it will be providing South Korean mobile provider SK Telecom with voice recognition technology. SK Telecom will be the first mobile service provider in the country to use voice biometrics for customer authentication.
As in the case of so many other voice authentication deployments, SK Telecom will use Nuance’s VocalPassword to replace the current question-and-answer system used to verify customers’ identities when they call in to access their accounts. While the system’s security benefits are obvious, in explaining the rationale behind the deal SK Telecom has been keen to emphasize the technology’s enhancement of customer convenience, allowing callers to quickly and easily identify themselves. In a statement, SK Telecom SVP Ahn Keun explained that voice biometric technology “is transforming the way we interact with our customers, allowing them a more convenient experience while also keeping their information secure.”
It’s another major international deployment for Nuance’s VocalPassword system, which has also been deployed on the other side of the world in places like Mexico. More recently, the company has enjoyed some success securing a financial services institution in South Africa, and has even been developing voice biometric technology for use in smart cars as well.
