SITA has announced record revenues of $1.6 billion for 2024, marking an 8.3 percent increase from the previous year. The growth is attributed to strong global demand for aviation IT infrastructure, SITA’s strategic acquisitions, and a surge in biometric deployments across airports and borders. The company reported gains across its Airports, Borders, and Aircraft divisions in every region.
Biometric Innovation and Global Infrastructure Expansion
One of the most significant drivers of SITA’s growth was the integration of Materna IPS, a specialist in self-service and biometric check-in technologies. Now operating under the brand “IPS – a SITA company”, the division has already secured high-profile contracts, including a biometric bag-drop system for New York’s JFK Terminal 6. This acquisition has strengthened SITA’s capabilities in airport automation and supports its strategy to become a digital architecture partner for the aviation industry.
The company’s Smart Path platform also saw major progress in India, where it supports the national Digi Yatra initiative. In 2024, the biometric boarding system served up to 80 percent of domestic air travelers and is projected to reach as many as 250 million users within seven years. This mirrors global trends in air travel digitization, with North American airlines among the leaders in adopting biometric and digital identity technologies.
Responding to Growth and Complexity in Air Travel
Global air transport IT spending reached an estimated $37 billion in 2024, according to SITA’s figures, as airlines and airports responded to rising traveler expectations, regulatory pressure, and operational bottlenecks. SITA’s CEO David Lavorel noted: “With air traffic set to grow 7 percent between 2025–2027, infrastructure will continue to be stretched. At the same time, travelers are expecting more convenience than ever, and regulatory pressure is rising. But the opportunities to do things better through transformation are huge.”
SITA’s recent deployments illustrate the diversity of its biometric solutions. These include automated immigration gates at Jamaica’s Sangster International Airport and a planned face-based boarding system at Geneva Airport, which is pending regulatory approval in Switzerland. These projects demonstrate SITA’s growing role in enabling seamless, touchless journeys across varied jurisdictions and regulatory environments.
Over the past several years, SITA has evolved beyond its role as a traditional IT provider to become a digital transformation partner for airports, airlines, and governments. The company continues to invest in AI, sustainability, and next-generation identity solutions aimed at streamlining travel while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.
