Jamaica’s Sangster Airport Launches Biometric Gates for Automated Immigration

Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, has completed a major upgrade of its biometric security systems. The new technology, implemented by MBJ Airports Limited (MBJ), enhances passenger processing through biometric verification and supports a broader digital transformation strategy accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biometric Arrival Processing and Future Expansion

The newly implemented system is now operational in the arrivals area, where travelers can pass through automated eGates operated by Jamaica’s Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA). Passengers arriving at the airport can use digital forms, self-service kiosks, and biometric authentication to complete the immigration process, reducing the need for face-to-face interaction with border officials. This development represents the first phase in MBJ’s plan to create a seamless travel experience by eventually integrating biometric processing throughout the entire passenger journey—from check-in to departure.

While biometric processing for departures is not yet fully deployed, MBJ has indicated that pilot programs and further rollouts are expected later in 2025.

The biometric initiative is part of a larger national effort to enhance Jamaica’s border management. Other major transport hubs, including Norman Manley International Airport and Montego Bay’s cruise port, are expected to adopt similar technology in a coordinated push toward an integrated border ecosystem. At SIA specifically, the upgrades coincide with MBJ’s 22nd anniversary of airport operations, underscoring the operator’s long-term role in shaping the region’s travel infrastructure.

Smart Infrastructure and Passenger Experience

Beyond biometric identification, SIA has introduced a suite of smart infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance the passenger experience. These include self-service check-in kiosks with biometric capability, QR code-based wayfinding tools, environmental sensors to optimize comfort, and advanced queue management powered by Bluetooth and Wi-Fi tracking. Video analytics and AI-based systems are also being deployed to streamline operations and reduce congestion.

The airport’s Air-Sea Lounge offers dedicated processing for cruise ship passengers, enabling seamless transitions from air to sea travel by bypassing traditional immigration and customs procedures.

Passenger response to the biometric systems has been overwhelmingly positive, according to MBJ and government sources. Metrics such as reduced wait times and increased satisfaction levels point to the effectiveness of the new technology. These results mirror global trends—such as those seen at Denver International Airport, which recently installed biometric boarding systems for international flights—and align with a 2019 SITA study showing that travelers generally prefer automated border control systems over traditional methods.
