SITA has opened a new research and development hub in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The facility is intended to support advancements in aviation technology, particularly in the areas of passenger processing and travel systems, by integrating automation, biometrics, and artificial intelligence technologies. It is part of SITA’s global network or R&D hubs, which also includes R&D facilities in London, Letterkenny, and New Delhi.
Marina Zviagina, SITA’s Vice President for Eastern Europe and Baltics, explained to Cities Today that Cluj-Napoca was selected for its skilled STEM workforce and “vibrant tech ecosystem.” She noted that the hub would focus on pilot projects aimed at improving passenger flow, baggage handling, and operational efficiency, with an emphasis on testing solutions that may be implemented at Cluj Airport.
The hub will also work on sustainable technology projects, with environmental initiatives aimed at reducing the operational impact of aviation technology.
One of the hub’s primary development focuses will be on SITA Flex, a digital platform that enables travelers to complete check-in and boarding processes via mobile devices, reportedly reducing wait times by as much as 40 percent. The Cluj hub will also hold regular workshops on trends in airport operations to ensure that emerging technologies remain scalable and relevant to evolving industry needs. This new facility is expected to contribute to SITA’s ability to develop secure, privacy-focused digital identity solutions, including technologies like the Digital Travel Credential (DTC).
SITA’s expansion efforts also include its recent acquisition of Materna IPS, a provider of passenger processing technologies for airports and airlines. This acquisition will allow SITA to enhance its offerings by combining Materna’s technology with SITA’s biometric and digital travel solutions. SITA has also extended its biometric capabilities through the deployment of its Smart Path system in nine Indian airports under the DigiYatra initiative, which enables end-to-end biometric processing.
By establishing the Cluj-Napoca R&D hub, SITA seeks to reinforce its role in advancing technology solutions within the aviation industry. The hub is intended to support the development of scalable, efficient, and secure technologies that address the increasing demands of air travel.
