SITA has been granted a five-year extension on its contract with Heathrow Airport, underscoring Heathrow’s trust in SITA’s capabilities to enhance security and streamline passenger experiences as the airport continues to modernize its digital infrastructure.
As Identity Week reports, this extended agreement will see SITA offering a wide array of network, telecommunications, and connectivity services, while also introducing new solutions for businesses operating at Heathrow. In 2023, Heathrow handled close to 80 million passengers, necessitating a robust digital and IT infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.
The services provided by SITA include the management of thousands of network access switches, wireless access points, and both analogue and internet phone lines. SITA’s on-site team at Heathrow will also support various projects and maintain ongoing operations related to network telecoms infrastructure, cybersecurity, radio, and operational technology. This support extends to Heathrow’s internal teams, commercial clients, and the broader supply chain.
“As air traffic increases across European airports, airports are increasingly prioritising IT to strengthen their operations, and give their passengers a seamless experience,” said Sergio Colella, President of Europe at SITA. “With this fantastic agreement, SITA continues to show why we remain the air transport industry’s most trusted partner.”
“By delivering a robust IT infrastructure, our goal is to make sure Heathrow can future-proof its network needs for effortless operations, all while making the passenger experience more enjoyable,” Colella added.
Helen Elsby, Chief Solutions Officer at Heathrow Airport, expressed satisfaction with the extended partnership, emphasizing that a robust IT infrastructure is vital for Heathrow’s mission to remain a leading airport prepared for the future.
The announcement follows news earlier this week that SITA finalized its acquisition of Materna IPS, having cleared all regulatory and legal hurdles. That strategic move is set to establish the world’s most comprehensive passenger service portfolio for airports and digital travel, with the integration expected to accelerate the digitalization of global aviation by enhancing check-in, baggage handling, and security processes.
