SITA has announced the complete integration of IPS Intelligent Passenger Solutions into its SITA Airports portfolio following regulatory and legal approvals in July 2024. The merger significantly expands SITA’s biometric and digital identity capabilities, as IPS is a major provider of facial recognition systems and automated passenger authentication solutions used in airports worldwide.
The enhanced division combines SITA’s airport management systems with IPS’s self-service technologies, including bag drops, kiosks, and biometric scanners. This integration expands SITA’s existing solutions, which include Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) – shared workstations that allow multiple airlines to access their own systems – and Airport Management Systems (AMS) that coordinate gate assignments, resource allocation, and flight information displays.
“Airports worldwide need to adopt technologies that can remove unnecessary bottlenecks at pinch points like check-in, security and embarkation,” said Nathalie Altwegg, SVP of Airports at SITA. “The addition of IPS a SITA company combines our respective products and expertise to deliver more efficient passenger processing.”
The integration builds on IPS’s established presence in the aviation sector, with over 2,300 Self-Bag Drop kiosks deployed across more than 120 airports worldwide. These systems currently process approximately 150,000 bag drops daily, according to company data.
The combined technology portfolio now includes facial recognition systems and contactless payment solutions, enabling passengers to complete tasks independently while reducing physical contact points. This follows SITA’s recent passenger survey showing increasing demand for automated airport processes.
The integration comes as airports worldwide seek to modernize their infrastructure. Recent deployments include JFK Airport’s Terminal 6 project, where IPS a SITA company will provide biometric bag drop systems as part of a $4.2 billion terminal modernization.
