SITA has extended its partnership with Geneva Airport, laying the groundwork for the introduction of biometric passenger screening kiosks in the near future.
The company announced that it has installed self-service systems at check-in, bag drop, and security, and that by the summer of next year it will have deployed 30 Smart Path TS6 kiosks, which support facial recognition. The TS6 kiosks will be deployed alongside 15 Smart Path Scan and Fly Mini self-bag drop units, with the self-service systems able to even process skis – a potentially important customer service measure in a city surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains.
The TS6 kiosks, however, could prove more impactful in the long run. SITA’s solution won last year’s IF Design award, thanks in part to their adaptive design and customizability with respect to different airport brands; more importantly, their support for biometrics could deliver a substantial change to the traveler experience.
“Once the biometric capability is activated, passengers will be able to seamlessly complete various steps of the journey such as check-in and bag drop by simply scanning their face at each touchpoint,” SITA explained in a statement.
In the meantime, SITA is working on implementing a new Airport Operations System in Geneva Airport that will help to optimize operations and deliver more real-time information to travelers.
The news comes shortly after SITA’s announcement of a partnership with Bahrain Airport Company that will see the company bring its Smart Path solution to the Bahrain International Airport. Both announcements this month help to illustrate the growing popularity of biometric passenger processing technologies at airports around the world, and of SITA’s prominence as a vendor of such solutions.
