Two innovative projects by the Biometrics & Profiling Centre of Expertise (B&P CoE) at HTX have been recognized with the Merit Award at the Science, Technology, and Engineering Innovation Challenge (STE IC) held on August 28, 2024. The award highlights advancements in biometric technologies aimed at enhancing immigration procedures in Singapore.
HTX, or the Home Team Science and Technology Agency, is a Singaporean government agency dedicated to driving innovation and technological advancements in the field of public safety and security. It serves as the technology arm of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), focusing on developing cutting-edge solutions across various domains, including biometrics, digital forensics, and robotics, to enhance the capabilities of Singapore’s Home Team agencies.
The first project, named Project eXtramural, involves the development of a Biometrics Self-Enrolment Kiosk that allows individuals to enroll their biometric data, including rolled fingerprints, facial features, and irises, at automated self-help stations.
The system is designed to minimize operator intervention, thereby reducing waiting and enrollment times.
The second project, Project eXorbital, introduces a “Walk-Look-Clear” biometric identification process. The Identification On The Move (IOTM) prototype developed under this project can capture biometric features while individuals are walking, aiming to streamline and expedite identification processes.
The B&P CoE team received the Merit Award from Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing at an awards ceremony that took place during the Public Service Science, Technology & Engineering Conference 2024. The recognition reflects the team’s dedication to developing innovative technologies that enhance security and efficiency in public services.
“This award is a testament of B&P CoE’s commitment to innovation,” said Melvin Low, B&P CoE’s Deputy Director (Biometrics). “The journey of exploration was not easy but definitely very fulfilling. The team will continue to innovate game-changing technological solutions that keep Singapore safe and secure.”
