Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has announced the implementation of biometric systems across all hospitals in the province to combat chronic staff absenteeism, a significant issue in the healthcare sector. The facial recognition-based system will ensure accountability and improve attendance among medical professionals, aiming to enhance the overall efficiency of Sindh’s healthcare facilities.
The minister stressed that the introduction of this technology would help tackle ongoing issues related to staff availability, especially in rural and underserved areas.
The move further underscores a growing enthusiasm for biometric technology in one of Pakistan’s major provinces, arriving as the Sindh government moves through a phased implementation of a biometric vehicle registration system. Ultimately, the policy will require buyers and sellers of vehicles to undergo biometric identity verification.
In addition to biometric monitoring, Dr. Azra outlined other critical reforms to strengthen the healthcare system, including the establishment of simulation labs in teaching hospitals to improve the training of healthcare workers. These reforms come amid efforts to address the shortage of key medical professionals, such as anesthesiologists, a gap that has forced the closure of some intensive care units (ICUs). The minister emphasized that steps are being taken to recruit more doctors, paramedics, and other essential personnel.
