Signicat’s flagship mobile ID solution is getting a biometric upgrade, with the company delivering a new “Face Authentication” feature.
The company’s MobileID solution is aimed primarily at organizations that regularly interact with a base of end users, such as consumers, allowing them to easily authenticate the latter through a mobile app. The MobileID system already supported Touch ID and Face ID on iOS, as well as fingerprint authentication on Android, but can now guard even more effectively against sophisticated presentation attacks thanks to the new anti-fraud system.
The Face Authentication feature is capable of performing both a “3D Liveness Check” and “3D Face Matching” for each authentication attempt on the end user’s part. It can detect a variety of spoofing methods, from those leveraging 2D photos to those employing realistic deepfake videos.
It is a timely solution, given the rising threat of deepfakes. According to research Signicat undertook with David Birch and Consult Hyperion, deepfakes now account for 6.5 percent of all fraud attempts, up 2,137 percent over the past three years.
“As fraud tactics evolve, so must our solutions,” said Simone Andersson, Signicat’s Product Manager for Mobile Identity. “This new feature is a testament to our dedication to staying ahead of the curve and ensuring our clients can operate securely in the digital landscape.”
Andersson added that the MobileID system “is PSD2 compliant and responds to all the requirements from regulated sectors.”
Signicat says the new Face Authentication feature can support a range of use cases, including authorizing high-value transactions, enabling account recovery, and resetting second authentication factors. And the MobileID Face Authentication system is not stored locally on the end user’s phone, ensuring that it can’t be hacked through an attack on the device itself.
The feature will be rolled out through the MobileID app starting in mid-July.
