Biometric authentication solutions provider BIO-key has launched a new USB fingerprint reader for Windows and Android. Called SideTouch, the device combines Eagle off-chip sensor technology from IDEX with BIO-key’s own Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) biometric system.
SideTouch is the latest BIO-key product to benefit from the company’s status as Microsoft’s biometric technology partner for Windows 10. It’s designed to offer an inexpensive, plug-and-play solution for biometric authentication, with an MSRP of $39.99 for the mass market. But it offers enterprise applications too, and is compatible with BIO-key’s WEB-key Biometric Asset Management and ID Director for Active Directory software.
Commenting on the offering in a statement, BIO-key CEO Mike DePasquale asserted that while products like Apple’s Touch ID system have helped to popularize biometric fingerprint authentication, most users don’t have the hardware to take advantage of the biometric capabilities of Windows 10’s Windows Hello security system—but “BIO-key is meeting this market need with another great, affordable device incorporating new and innovative technology from IDEX,” he said.
SideTouch is being showcased at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with a wider product launch to follow.
